Early computers used CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors, the same technology as colour televisions when they were introduced in 1954 (the TV, that is). It wasn’t until the 2000s that LCD monitors came onto the scene so it’s fair to say that making decisions about what monitor was best for your needs wasn’t really on the cards until more recently. 

Now, there are 4K monitors, gaming monitors, portable monitors and flat panel monitors that have been thrown into the ocean of computer tech. You may be wondering what computer monitor is best for you. Time to go fishing!

Different types of computer monitors

There are a number of computer monitors on the market today, each with its own benefits. Depending on what you plan to use it for, whether for work, gaming or entertainment, one option may be better over another for your needs. While all of the monitors listed below are excellent, it’s important you consider what you plan to use it for most before making a decision. Let’s get started!

4K monitor

A 4K monitor refers to the exciting display resolution beyond HD (high definition). The 4K monitor offers 4 times as many pixels as the HD display (pixels are the crazy amount of squares of colour that make up the images you see on your screen), which means you can get more space on your screen to play with. If you’re purchasing a larger screen, your work surface increases (more apps, windows, tabs and so on can be displayed on the screen) but the quality of what you’re looking at on the screen stays sharp. You can also see smaller details more clearly. 

That being said, unless you’re working with image software or are super keen on gaming and watching television on your monitor (it’s like you’re looking out your window!), it probably isn’t necessary for business purposes. For those of you who fall into the gaming and creative categories, a larger screen will really allow that 4K resolution to pop and you can take full advantage of what it has to offer in all of its coloured, sharp and detailed glory!

Gaming monitor 

A gaming monitor is excellent for – you guessed it – gaming. These monitors tend to have quicker refresh rates and response times, which help if you’re competing in a game in real time. You don’t want your game to lag only to find a competitor has found an edge because of it. Basically, they help you play hard and fast. 

Gaming monitors often have a wider range of motion, as well, allowing you to position the monitor in such a way that makes it more comfortable for you to spend time focusing on the game and screen.

While these monitors don’t always offer the best resolution, you have choices when it comes to what resolution you’re after. Some monitors sacrifice better resolution for speed and a smoother finish while you game. When it comes to surfing the web or watching videos, a gaming monitor is generally no better and no worse than your standard monitor.

Curved monitor 

The curved monitor is relatively new to the scene and has some great benefits. These monitors use ocular perception, taking advantage of all three dimensions we see in: length, width and height, offering a more immersive experience.

Believe it or not, a curved monitor is actually more gentle on your eyes, as well. By having a curve, we are able to take in the entirety of the screens’ images all at once, lessening the strain on your eyes. Just keep it away from light sources, because these guys are more prone to glare given they project light at different angles.

Portable monitor 

A portable monitor is, need we even say, more portable. These days, working on the go has become much more normal and the option to take an extra screen with you to extend your laptop screen to two is a great option to have. These monitors also allow you to scale up your mobile device!

There are numerous choices when it comes to selecting your portable monitor, but looking at size, weight and resolution are all important, keeping in mind what it is you plan to use them for. Finding one with a USB-C connection is also extremely convenient these days when you’re working on the road. While they’re good for watching videos and streaming if you’re traveling, they provide really great support for business travel in particular.

Flat panel monitor 

A flat panel monitor has a more familiar name for some – a flat screen. These monitors are the most commonly used, have LCD displays, are thin and generally more lightweight than some other monitors on the market.

The monitors are fairly affordable, don’t take up a great deal of space and their LCD display consumes less power than other types of monitors. The sizes vary, while smaller ones are great for work, larger ones are good options for gaming and entertainment, offering clear and quality colour. If you have little ones around, however, be wary. A flat panel monitor has a softer screen that can be damaged more easily and it’s tougher to clean off those little fingerprints!
